The recent DANA storm that hit large parts of the Spanish mainland and the Balearic Islands with heavy rain and thunderstorms has once again shown that rivers can easily burst their banks, causing flooding. It is all too common for houses to be partially destroyed or damaged by flooding, which unfortunately also regularly results in deaths. Climate change<\/h2>\n

Climate change or not, flooding is also becoming more common in Spain as rivers burst their banks due to heavy rainfall or are hit by rising sea levels. More than one million homes in Spain are located in flood-prone areas, with an average or possible risk of flooding. This is 4.3% of all homes in the country, according to calculations by the newspaper elDiario.es<\/a>\u00a0 based on data from the Land Registry and the National System for Cartografy of floodable areas<\/a>.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n

The data on the map of Spain below includes all the buildings located in areas that are in a risk zone. These areas have a return period of 100 years, which means that during this period one or more floods occur. On the map you can see if your house or street is in a floodable area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Spain there are more than 370,000 buildings that are located in floodable areas. This is a problem, because floods and rising sea levels are becoming more frequent. This is the first time that the situation of the more than 12 million homes in Spain has been analysed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
