Health insurance: how are you insured in Spain?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a European Health Insurance Card (available free of charge from your health insurance fund) you can go to Spanish public hospitals. Your Belgian health insurance fund will then cover the necessary medical costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you also want to be reimbursed for non-urgent care in Spain? Then you need Spanish health insurance. Without this insurance, you often have to return to Belgium or the Netherlands for further care after the first medical assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are you considering moving to Spain permanently? Then contact your health insurance fund in advance to prevent an interruption in your insurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What fixed costs and taxes are involved?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just like in Belgium, in Spain you pay for:

\ud83c\udfe0 Syndic costs, if your home is part of a co-ownership.
\ud83d\udd25 Building insurance for damage due to fire, flooding, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, the Spanish tax authorities charge the following taxes:
\ud83d\udccc Municipal tax (IBI or SUMA) \u2013 payable annually.
\ud83d\udccc Waste collection (\u2018basura\u2019) \u2013 a local fee.
\ud83d\udccc Non-resident tax \u2013 calculated on the cadastral value.
\ud83d\udccc Rental tax \u2013 if you rent out the home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Depending on the region and your home, these costs amount to an average of \u20ac1,500 \u2013 \u20ac2,500 per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You do not have to pay extra tax for your property in Spain, but you do have to declare it to the tax authorities. This can affect your cadastral income (KI) and tax scale (progression reservation).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
