🧭 Solar orientation in Spain: consciously choose light and sun!

When buying a home in Spain, solar orientation is a crucial factor. Not only for your comfort, but also for energy efficiency, light and your daily quality of life.

Did you know that two identical apartments can give a completely different experience, just by their orientation? Think of morning sun on your terrace with a coffee or a warm afternoon sun by your pool – it all depends on where your home is oriented.

Personal choise

The orientation of a home in Spain is mainly a matter of personal preference. It all depends on when you want to enjoy your home: in the winter months or mainly during the summer. South-facing homes are popular because they catch a lot of sun, but keep in mind that this causes intense heat in the summer months.

Those who come to Spain mainly in the summer sometimes consciously choose east- or west-facing homes for more comfort. So get good advice and choose what suits your lifestyle best.

Below is an overview per orientation, so that you can make a well-considered choice:

🌄 Facing north

  • Limited sun in summer, early morning and late afternoon
  • Hardly any direct sun the rest of the year
  • Still enough light possible thanks to open view or reflection of other buildings
  • Ideal for those looking for coolness in the warm summer months

🌤️ Northeast orientation

  • Sun from morning until about noon, except in winter
  • Good compromise between light and not too much heat
  • Nice for people who like to have breakfast in the sun

☀️ East facing

  • Sun from sunrise to noon, all year round
  • Perfect for a fresh, sunny start to the day
  • In summer you have shade in the afternoon – wonderfully cooling

🌞 South-East Orientation

  • More sun in the winter months, especially from the afternoon
  • In the summer less sun than south-facing, which is pleasant
  • Good balance between light and temperature

🔆 Facing south

  • Sun all day long in autumn, winter and spring
  • In summer, mainly sun during the middle of the day
  • Ideal for sun worshippers and winterers
  • Please note: on the ground floor, shadow from upper floors can play a role

🌇 Southwest orientation

  • Lots of sun in winter, from noon to sunset
  • Warm afternoon sun the rest of the year
  • Perfect for those who enjoy a sunny afternoon and evening

🌆 Western orientation

  • Sun from noon to sunset
  • Lovely for a sunny aperitif on the terrace
  • It can be warm in the summer, so a canopy or sunshade is recommended

🌅 Northwest orientation

  • Sun in the afternoon until sunset, from spring to autumn
  • In winter only sun in the late afternoon
  • Suitable for those who love soft evening sun
