Teulada

Teulada is a village in the Costa Blanca region. Together with Moraira, it forms the municipality of Teulada-Moraira. In contrast to the touristic Moraira, the quiet Spanish life has been preserved in Teulada.

The history of Teulada goes back a long way. The discovery of a cave in Cap d’Or indicates that the first people settled here in the Late Stone Age. The estimate ranges from 15,000 to 20,000 years before the beginning of our era. However, the village of Teulada was only founded much later, namely in 1386. In the sixteenth century, Teulada was regularly the target of Barbary pirates. That is why defensive works were built at that time. A remnant of this is the lookout tower on the peninsula just above Moraira.

You don’t see many tourists in Teulada. Most of them see no more than the wide street Avenida del Mediterráneo, on the way to Moraira or surrounding urbanizations. Anyone who takes the trouble to take a side street towards the centre will discover a beautiful, quiet village where life is still truly Spanish. On summer days, the streets seem deserted in the afternoon. However, anyone who walks through Teulada will hear Spanish families behind the open windows. As a tourist, you should definitely take a walk through the historic centre. The fairly narrow streets look picturesque because disturbing elements such as cars, neon signs and flashy shop windows are absent here. The old centre of Teulada, where some of the houses date from the 17th and 18th centuries, is almost an oasis of peace. A striking building is the Iglesia de Santa Catarina. This church dates from the 16th century. It is a fairly sober Gothic church that is not open to visitors outside of services. Fifty metres further on is the Ermita de la Divina Pastora. This sanctuary is slightly older than the church. It is estimated that it dates from the 15th century.
